A former coworker from Honeybee Robotics, Paul Bartlett, was VP of Engineering at Atair Aerospace in Brooklyn when I worked with them on a 4 month contract in 2009. They designed and manufactured precision guided parachute systems, among other things. These systems were basically smart boxes that could steer a parachute and a given payload down to a target the same way a human paratrooper would. I improved the design of their next generation Onyx Precision Airdrop Systems to enable mass production, and coordinated the assembly of a batch of a dozen Micro Lights. The Onyx Micro Light could deliver 10 – 150 pound payloads from a variety of manned and unmanned platforms.
